I adore themed campaigns and it is my preffered style to make games. My most cherished dnd game is when we all play as gladiators with an arena focus basically turning the game into a sports anime with rival teams and rankings. Focusing on the matches gives us a different approach to combat and we often have to keep team reputation in mind and how to appeal to an audience. (whole team dumped charisma so we have a sort of accidental theme with that we all are fish out of water in how to handle fame and adoration) I ran what started as a oneshot where the group was meant to be monstrous races in a remote region cut off from civilsation and my players commited making a drider, goblin and harpy and that little oneshot actually evolved into a proper campaign. Im just glad no one insisted on "im gonna be a human anyways!!"

The 'trap' vs 'potentially deadly device that's actually technically just a puzzle' distinction feels really arbitrary. It's like when Jigsaw says he's never killed anyone. In an extremely literal way, it's technically accurate, but nobody on planet Earth is buying it.

I think if i had to do one right now, I would do it so the Adventurers got summons all near the same time and the Paying Party offers them some extra gold for "management" Or basically a wildfire plague is burning through the Towns so the Adventurers would all board a Train, Wagon or Airship. Also would be interesting if you did a gradual roll out of the party as like the Main Warrior walk in to a Rogue, Wizard and Bard trying to open a door and the Warrior just throws a Boulder at the door. 😂

I like Tiny D6 series of games. Frontiers is no different, though it fails in one regard. All Space Games need to either Emulate Star Wars or Star Trek. This one is Star Trek only. To do Star Wars, you need to house rule it. I did just that. I added another Psychic type called Precognition. The four powers it gives are a savings throw to block ranged attacks (attacker rolls with Disadvantage, but only a 6 hits the target while a 1 or a 2 deflects back and hits the shooter), second is to meditate and roll a normal/2D6 test with success meaning the GM can give you a vague clue about the plot of the scenario. The third ability is to roll a normal/2D6 test, and success gives you access to a few of the normal Abilities for the duration of that scene (like night fighter or eidetic memory GM choice). The fourth ability is to roll a normal test/2D6, and success means you retroactively brought an item or prepared a plan with another character ahead of time, and you can RP this out with a "flashback" scene.

I'm so glad you're doing this review! I, too, bought this campaign. I find that the GM and Player information is scattered throughout the book. And, I'm struggling with how to find things quickly when I run the game. So far, I've fallen back to separating that info into a Google Doc and running the game from that instead of from the book. That seems to run smoother during play time. I'd be interesting if you have any suggestions or tips that you do to make this campaign run smoother. Note: I'm use to the way that WotC wrote their campaigns. Background/overview is in chapter 1 and player read-aloud text is separate from GM notes as the party traverses a dungeon. I like Traveller better than D&D at this point (as do my players) but this is the part I think Mongoose could do better at with their published adventures.

Seth, something I don't understand about the premise of this video. If it's not the GM's job to lead the player's through their story (because it's supposed to be the players' story), why is it the GM's job to maintain some kind of arms race in order to effectively "challenge" them? Shouldn't the GM simply portray the setting or world as it is? Some NPCs may be too much of a threat for the players to take in an even fight, motivating them to avoid them or get clever to level the playing field while other NPCs may simply lack the capabilities to stand up to the players and need to appeal to a higher power or flee.

Do you play Skill-Based modern-era or scifi RPGs where power level is determined soley by equipment and not a character's Level or Abilities? If not, nothing I say will help you understand. If so, you should understand

@@SSkorkowsky I didn't realize till after I commented that this was an older video so thank you for the response. Not what I expected though. I figured you would write something about how sometimes verisimiltude must be compromised for more satisfying game design. I certainly don't have as much experience as you though I have played or run WoD, GURPS and Trail of Cthulhu and am actually trying to design my own homebrew for such a system. It sounds like we may simply have a fundamental difference of preference for the role or style of the GM, which is absolutely fine. What I was getting at was that I prefer to present worlds the way they would be based on what makes sense in the setting. I prefer a style that I've seen referred to as "Combat As War", whereas it sounds like perhaps you prefer "Combat As Sport". Love the channel and all the best. P.S. Do you think you might ever do a follow up to the Heist video focused on running "assault heists" or raids?

Oh my god, even before Jack's last lines I felt increasingly excited for this adventure, and now I can't wait for the next chapter! When I saw this video in my feed I felt so happy as I've been looking forward to more campaign diaries! Loving the characters, both Travellers and the NPCs we met so far! Harlan is such a cool character, I really expected him to be around for much longer but I love the way he got his sendoff and how even in death his cold, ruthless character shined. That was awesome, and Detective Odoy reminded me of Tsuda Kenjiro, who voiced my favourite character of all time, and many others who I like, so even before I learned he was such a fun character I already liked him. Thank you for this video Seth! Your acting as the crew and Jack is always awesome to watch! Again, can't wait for the next chapter!!

On what level to bring new PCs into the campaign, if it's a returning player I give their new PC 90% of the XP the previous character had. So, if they left the campaign with 50,000 XP, they come back into it with 45,000. If multi-classed, the XP is totaled and then they get 90% of that. If it's a new player, I give their PC 90% of the XP of whichever existing player has the lowest XP in the party. So if the group has an XP range of 50,000 - 60,000, then the new player's character starts at 45,000. Note that I play a 2E/5E hybrid, where I use the levelling / XP system from 2E but most of the mechanics for 5E. Been doing it since 5E was released, and it works very well.

Your description of the deep space roleplaying game where the group responds to a distress signal in order to introduce a new PC was spot-on for one of my previous campaigns...with a twist. The party responded to a distress signal, finding an escape pod from a ship reported as being lost a few months earlier. On board, they find the last remaining survivor of the ship in suspended animation. They revive him and bring him back on board. They, of course, take him to their sickbay for a complete work up. As he begins to revive and awaken, they ask him his name, where he's from. In a halting, scratchy voice, he responds "Dall...Dallas..." "Dallas?" responds one of the PCs, "Texas? Cool! I'm from Texas, too!" "No...I meant my name is Dall..." He's interrupted by convulsions seizing his body, arching his back in outrageous pain, as something starts pushing up from INSIDE his chest... You see, the new PC wasn't Dallas. It was the chest burster... ;)

The themed campaign focus in the Conan 2d20 splatbooks was something I liked. I wish more splats took that route. Want to play a band of thieves and second-story men, but also want the PC build options to be just as variable as the core game? Get the "Thief" book (or whichever theme you're doing). It has a full range of typical party archetypes, but provides new ones more representative of the unified party theme in that world. You still get the warrior, thief, sorcerer/priest types, but more thematically appropriate. I know you don't plan on playing it anymore, but I wanted to point out that other game creators should consider this approach in games containing lots of character build options.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Indefinite insanity can also be cured via self-help using the key connection: "Each investigator begins the game with one backstory entry that is especially important to them: this is their “key connection”. If the player chooses to use their investigator’s key connection, they are granted a bonus die when making their Sanity roll. In addition to the 1D6 Sanity points gained for a successful Sanity roll, the investigator will recover from any indefinite insanity. If the Sanity roll is failed, that aspect of the investigator’s backstory is revised, and that investigator no longer has a key connection."(Keeper's Book, Page 168)

Maybe its just the tables that I've been to but I have always found the power games to be the non-roleplayers who are just there to roll dice and get big numbers a la a video game. I have routinely played with guys who show up to the table with 5 or 6 sheets stapled together for their character sheet and its all just weapons, skill progressions, feats, etc, that they want in the future. Then when asked about a single personality trait, goal or quirk of the character they just kinda shrug and say "He likes fighting." I'm more on the roleplaying side of the spectrum and I prefer games like CoC. Generally if I ask you about your character and the first thing you mention is a stat or weapon, I'm already kinda assuming you're going to be a boring player.

34:00 I see this sort of thing mentioned in sci-fi a lot, of fighting aboard ships done using low-powered weapons or melee weapons to avoid risking a hull breech. But my inner autism brain just can't help thinking: If the ships have armor that can provide protection from ship-scale weapons, lasers missiles etc, then what risk is a dinky person-scale rifle to the ship's outer hull? It's fine to want swords in space because swords in space is cool, I just don't think that justification for it works upon closer inspection. I needed to get that out of my system. Thank you internet.

I don't understand why being able to die at chargen would turn people off from the game. I always saw it as a silly quirk of the system. It wasn't very likely, and if it did happen... so what? You're making a character, the game hasn't even begun, it's not like if it happens you can no longer join the game. And I remember it being fairly simple to make a character too so having to start over wasn't a huge deal. Then again I'm the kind of person who, if a video game lets them die during the prologue, always does the first time. Man Tides of Numenara got a big smile on my face less than five minutes in...
